Grand River Greenway

A major initiative to reconnect people with the waterway

The Grand River Greenway is an emerging network of public parks, multi-use trails and other civic amenities that aspires to significantly enhance the region’s economic, environmental and social health for all, particularly communities that lack access to the Grand River corridor and the opportunity it presents.

In greater Grand Rapids, the Greenway follows the Grand River corridor from the City of Lowell on Kent County’s eastern border to Millennium Park on the west.

Grand Rapidians envision the 5-mile reach of the Greenway from Millennium Park to Riverside Park immediately north of Downtown Grand Rapids as the hub in a regional recreation system that links river-adjacent communities with Lake Michigan, the White Pine Trail State Park, the Fred Meijer Trail and thousands of acres of riverfront greenspace.

Building the Grand River Greenway is not one single project. The initiative involves an array of public and private partners working together across numerous projects.

Taken together, the initiative can seem quite complex. The Grand River Network provides a central point of connection between the plans, the people, and the resources required to realize the vision decades in the making. This page summarizes the projects, partners and other important details in a way that is easy to understand.
